How I Grew My Lashes from My Kitchen Cabinet

I know my friends are tired of me. Ever since I discovered this ingredient, I’ve told anyone that would listen about it. Recently, it’s been all the rage, but I’ve been using it for a couple of years now, but not for the reason of growing lashes or eyebrows. It’s rice water, friends.

Around 2016 or so during the start of my road to improving myself inside and out, I was looking for ways to improve the texture of my skin. I went to one of my favorite sites, Pinterest, to look for some ways to do that. I came across rice water and the way that Asian women have benefited from using it for decades. Rice water is a good toner with nutrients that will leave your skin smooth, tight, and glowing.

I’m always game to try something at least once. But I stayed consistent with it for months.

I’ve always had a good brow, not necessarily the fullest, but a good shape….my lashes were another story. I wasn’t Kermit the Frog when it came to my eyelashes, but I longed (no pun intended) to have lush lashes. A few weeks after using the rice water every night, I realized that my brows were fuller and my lashes had grown in a lot. I was getting compliments on set from makeup artists and from friends about my lashes. The only thing that I had been doing differently was using the rice water. Game changer.

The way that I use rice water on my face is the same as the way I would use a toner. After I wash my face, I take a cotton ball (or you can use a cotton pad, your preference), dip it in the rice water and rub the cotton ball all over my face, including my brows and lashes. I don’t wash it off immediately. I leave it on overnight and wash off during my morning routine.

I wish that I had some good before pics, but I didn’t expect them to grow so I didn’t document it. *shrugs*

It’s really simple to make rice water. All you need are two ingredients: rice and water.

  1. Place the desired amount of rice in a jar. I like using mason jars because the rice water seems to last longer.
  2. Add water to the jar of rice.
  3. Let the rice and water sit at room temperature for a few hours. I let mine sit overnight if I don’t need it right away.
  4. When I use plastic containers it does ferment faster, but spoils even quicker. You can ferment to your desire in a plastic container and then pour it into a mason jar later.
  5. Refrigerate.
  6. To speed things up, you can also boil the rice in water and place it in a jar after cooling, then refrigerate.

I tend to keep my rice water in the refrigerator for about a week.

The key to this (or anything for that matter) is to stay consistent. You can’t do anything for a day or two, or here and there and expect change. So stick with it and let me know if you notice any difference in your brows or lashes.

Let me know if you’ve used rice water before and if it works for you!
